This is a guide on how to Jailbreak iOS 6.1 Beta 1 tethered on iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPod Touch 4th Generation, and iPod Touch 3rd Generation. The guide will take you through step by step on how to reach a successful iOS Jailbreak on this device.
The following is once again a TETHERED Jailbreak. This means that every time your battery drains to 0% or your device turns off, you will have to Boot Tethered, which we will explain in the end of the guide.
Step 1: Download Redsn0w and iOS 6.0 Firmware
Download the latest version of Redsn0w by going to the iPhone Dev Team Blog and scrolling down to get either the Mac or Windows version.
(the following links might be an older version of Redsn0w but still work for this version of iOS 6.1)
Download redsn0w 0.9.15b3 (Windows) [Run in administrative mode]
You will also need to download iOS 6.0, yes that is not a typo, version 6.0 is needed to trick this version of Redsn0w into thinking the iOS 6.1 Beta 1 firmware is 6.0, doesn’t require any extra work.
Be sure to download iOS 6 for whichever device you have (i.e. iPod Touch 4G = Download iPod Touch 4G iOS 6.0 Firmware).
All firmwares can be found at this website. (Download file extension will be .IPSW)
Step 2: Unzip Redsn0w
Now the you’ve downloaded Redsn0w, unzip Redsn0w using Archive Utility on Mac, or something like WinRar on Windows.
Step 3: Open up Redsn0w
After unzipping Redsn0w, open up the folder and run Redsn0w. Windows users right-click on Redsn0w and press “Run as Administrator”. (Note: Redsn0w needs to connect to the internet, if you have any firewall enabled like ZoneAlarm or Little Snitch, please turn it off for now)
Step 4: Plug in your iPod Touch
Redsn0w is now opened up and ready to go! Plug in your iPhone or iPod Touch running iOS 6.1 and make sure your computer recognizes it. The botton of Redsn0w should say “Connected: 6.1″.
Step 5: Select .IPSW
On Redsn0w click the “Extras” button followed by the “Select .IPSW” button and find your iOS 6.0 .IPSW file that you should have downloaded in Step 1.
Step 6: Press “Jailbreak”
After you have selected your .IPSW, go back to the main page of Redsn0w and press the “Jailbreak” button to get started.
You might be prompted to use the DFU ramdisk method, if you have a lot of movies, music, etc. on your device, pressing “Yes” is preferred. If you have an unactivated iPhone, also press “Yes”.
Step 7: DFU Mode
In this step we have to put the iPhone or iPod Touch in DFU mode, which is very simple. You may either follow the steps on the screen, or follow this guide.
First, we will turn off the iPhone or iPod Touch by holding down the Power button, and “Slide to Power Off”. Get ready to hold and release some buttons, so have your device in hand and click “Next” on Redsn0w.
Hold down to Power button for 3 seconds and continue holding.
Do not release the power button, and now hold down the Home button at the same time for 10 seconds.
Finally, release the Power button, but continue holding the Home button 15 seconds. Redsn0w will start Jailbreaking before 15 seconds are up, but you need to continue holding until you see Redsnow working.
Redsn0w will now “exploit using Limera1n”, you don’t need to do anything here, just wait.
And when that is finished you will find this screen where it’s better to just check Install Cydia and Enable Battery Percentage. Click Next.
Step 8: The Jailbreak Process
Now your iPhone or iPod Touch will go into Jailbreak mode where it will run a bunch of code on the screen, download and install everything it needs to install Cydia and Jailbreak your device. This only takes a minute or two,Once this is done, your device will now reboot by itself, so feel free to grab a cup of coffee from the kitchen.
Step 9: Boot Tethered
Now that everything has installed, we must boot our device using Boot Tethered.
Open up Redsn0w once again, go into Extras, and select your .IPSW as you did in Step 5.
Now click “Just Boot”.
Put your device in DFU Mode as you did in Step 7 and click “Next”. Now you can just put your device down and let Redsn0w do its thing, afterwards your device should boot back up with the PwnApple logo on the boot screen. When your iPhone or iPod Touch boots back up, you will see Cydia on the Springboard.
Step 10: Jailbreak Successful + Quick Cydia Setup
When your device is successfully Jailbroken, you should see the Cydia App icon on one of your app pages.
Open up Cydia, make sure you’re connected to your network, and you will get a prompt asking whether you would like Cydia to use User, Hacker, or Developer mode. Don’t mess around with these, just tap “User”.
At this point your iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPod Touch 4G or iPod Touch 3G Jailbreak was successful and you are free to roam Cydia and enjoy your Jailbroken iPod Touch. Remember, if your device ever shuts off, just do Step 9 again via a computer.
