Rumor has it, the Untethered iOS 6.1 Jailbreak will be released this Sunday: before, during, or after the Superbowl. Untethered Jailbreak tends to be released sometime in the morning, usually around 3 A.M. PST, but not always. For those of us who are hoping to Jailbreak iOS 6.1 Untethered on the first day, we’ve got you covered with a guide on How To Prepare for the Untethered iOS 6.1 Jailbreak.

Step #1: Supported Devices

The evad3rs team has mentioned on the official Evad3rs tool website: all iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad Mini and iPad devices will be able to Untethered Jailbreak as long as they are running iOS 6, iOS 6.0.1, iOS 6.0.2, or iOS 6.1. It also doesn’t hurt to be on the latest iOS firmware able to be Jailbroken, meaning iOS 6.1. Follow the guide, don’t update just yet.

Devices Supported on the Untethered iOS 6.1 Jailbreak:

  • iPhone 5
  • iPhone 4S
  • iPhone 4
  • iPhone 3GS
  • iPod touch 5th generation
  • iPod touch 4th generation
  • iPad mini
  • iPad 4
  • iPad 3
  • iPad 2
  • Apple TV 2nd generation

Step 2: Computer Requirements for Evasi0n Tool

Evad3rs have mentioned some requirements needed for the Untethered iOS 6 / iOS 6.1 Jailbreak tool known as Evasi0n. Windows users will need to have a machine running Windows XP or later. Max OS X users will need to have their OS updated to 10.5 or later. Finally, Linux users might get the Evasi0n tool at a later date, but they need be running at least Linux x86 / x86_64 or later.

Step 3: Sync The Devices You’re Planning To Jailbreak

We can’t stress this one enough. Many users update their iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad Mini or iPad and forget to sync to iTunes or iCloud before the update. They end up losing valuable information on their devices and regret ever updating. A simple sync to either of the aforementioned services will back up your iDevice entirely, make sure to check that it’s all synced up. If you are running a Jailbroken iOS device already, you can download PkgBackup package from Cydia to save all of your tweaks, themes, Jailbreak apps, etc.

Step 4: Update to iOS 6.1 Safely after Sync

Now it is time to update your iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad Mini or iPad to prepare for the Evasi0n Untethered 6.1 Jailbreak. Of course you can stay on previous iOS versions, but why would you, get the latest and greatest iOS 6.1.

For this step, make sure you update to iOS 6.1 through iTunes and not Over The Air Update. OTA Update tends to mess with the Jailbreak process and the Evasi0n tool is not built to support it just yet, maybe in the future. After doing the previous steps, plug your device into your computer, and update to iOS 6.1 via iTunes.

If you have already done an Over The Air update to iOS 6.1 and would like the Jailbreak iOS 6.1 Untethered, not too big of a problem. Sync your device once again, make sure you have all of your data, and plug it into iTunes this time. After plugging into iTunes, go to your device tab (upper right-hand corner in iTunes 11) and click Restore. This will download the iOS 6.1 firmware, and update the device in the correct fashion.
