Earlier this week M.I.C. Gadget reported that a smuggling ring has been busted for iPhone 5, iPad, and other electronic smuggling. The smugglers snuck in over $80 million of electronic goods over a course of time and now are standing trial.
The group managed to smuggle 227 iPhone 5, 22 iPad, 308 older cellphones and 1,514 LCD monitors in a single sting into China, where they sold them for profit due to currency rates outside the country. The number of stolen electronics by this specific smuggling ring amounts to 160,000 gadgets and LCD displays. The group is said to be selling upwards of about 20,000 iPhone and iPad units monthly on Alibaba marketplace.
The trial is currently taking place at the Shenzhen Intermediate People’s Court, where 104 suspects are either on trial or awaiting trial. Among these suspects are “stylish young men, housewives, and one person over 70 years old” describes Southern Metropolis Daily (via TUAW). Definitely an interesting group of smugglers.
